Becoming Digital

Becoming Digital

You can’t swing a dead cat without overhearing a boardroom conversation about “digital transformation”. And for good reason. Digital is a great way to tell stories of your products and services to customers, a way to deliver utiliity and improve the customer service, and it’s a way to become more organizationally efficient in delivering value. In this episode, David and Justin discuss the definition of “digital” as well as introduce the primary topics associated with digital transformation. Here are the notes from the show:

  • Digital is analog to the biological nervous system
  • We’re going to focus on digital for several episodes in order to unpack:
    • What is digital anyway?
    • Traits of effective digital enterprises
    • Fining your digital sweet spot
    • Designing your digital organization.
  • Jeffrey Immelt from GE states that “every organization needs to be a digital organization”
  • Digital capabilities mimic several bodily systems. DIgital wallet, payment and banking tools act as the circulatory system. Connected devices and integrated software act as the sensory system. Machine learning algorithms and predictive models act as the cognitive center of the nervous system. Digital is a pervasive connected tissue.
  • The full definition of digital will unfold over the whole program, but let’s begin with 3 attributes that digital organizations have in common:
    • Creating value in the process of executing a vision of customer experience
    • Creating value for customers at the new frontiers of the business world
    • Building foundational capabilities that support the entire structure
  • “Do you have a digital strategy” (and its derivatives) is the wrong question to ask
    • The right question is more fundamental – do you have a business strategy?
    • Digital is ultimately a “how”, not a what or a why question
  • Three areas where digital transformation is taking place:
    • Creating value in the process of executing a vision for CX
    • Creating value for customers
    • (Re)building capabilities
