How to make an agile organization

Agile is such an important and helpful trend in making organizations more effective. In this episode, David and Justin discuss HOW to make your organization more agile. Here are some notes from the show:

  • HBR has a great article we reference on this show called “Embracing Agile
  • The fact is that we believe that agile is incredibly helpful – but it’s not necessarily for everyone – or for every part of your organization
  • Peter Drucker said that each organization should have multiple operating modes and that it depends on the function – this is equivalent to the different systems within the human body all working together to form the body
  • You can find the BCG article on “Your strategy needs a strategy” here
  • Agile can also be used in certain areas of existing businesses to help important dimensions on the inside of the organization:
    • Product development processes
    • Marketing projects
    • Strategic planning processes
    • Supply-chain challenges
    • Resource allocation decisions
  • Agile doesn’t work so well for things like:
    • Routine operations
    • Plant maintenance
    • Purchasing
    • Sales calls
    • Accounting
  • Agile, at its core, requires four things:
    • A cadre of eager participants
    • Building projects around motivated people
    • Give them the environment and support they need
    • Trust them to get the job done
  • Five steps to help make your org more agile:
    • Learn what agile is
    • Start small and let it build
    • Customize
    • Be agile from the top
    • Destroy barriers
  • As Jesus put it: “Secular organizations lead by lording it over other people (think Egyptian structures with command and control processes) – it is not so in the kingdom (where the image of the body of Christ will operate),
