People: Dave Gray

Don’t look now, but this isn’t your grandfather’s economy anymore. Gone are the days of punching out widgets and optimizing for the factory. Now we need to optimize for interaction and service delivery. In this episode, David and Justin discuss the work of Dave Gray, the author of The Connected Company.

Here are the notes from the show:

  • Dave Gray’s work has inspired THIS show as it was one of the seminal reads that kicked off our thesis for the David Stark Collective
  • 80% of the US economy is now based on service; driven by product saturation, IT, and urbanization
  • Even products are really just “services delivered in the moment”
  • Services are different than product-companies since they need to be co-created with customers and can’t be separated from context
  • In a connected company, employees closest to the service interface are a critical feedback mechanism
  • When in doubt, go towards the fear
  • “Every time you adapt to a situation, you change it, compelling others to respond in order to remain competitive. In business and in nature, this ongoing process of adaptive moves and countermoves by multiple parties is called coevolution.”
  • Gray’s work reminds us of Paul’s preamble to 1 Corinthians 12: “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 there are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”
  • Gray quotes W. Edwards Deming, a great man of organizational change who orchestrated the Japanese takeover of huge parts of the automobile market after World War ll. “What we need to do is learn to work in the system, by which I mean that everybody, every team, every division, every platform, every component is there not for individual profit or recognition, but for the contribution to the system as a whole, on a win-win basis.”
