Sharing Together

Sharing Together

In this episode, Dave and Justin explore the role of sharing in a professional environment. Here are the notes from the show.

  • Dave describes the natural sharing behavior he’s observed in younger generations as well as how people outside the church often exhibit this quality better than those inside the church
  • Discussion of Acts 4
  • Dave and Justin discuss the evolution of industrial “epochs” from agrarian to knowledge and how sharing has become more prevalent as time goes on
  • Dave defines and describes the “sharing economy” and provides examples including airbnb, 99 Dresses, and Air Tasker
  • Justin provides examples of colleagues who have started businesses that are in the sharing economy like Kidizen
  • Dave introduces us to Beth Buczynski’s book “Sharing is Good” and notes that the author claims that our world is filled with plenty of resources, but hoarding prevents everyone from benefiting
  • Justin discusses how entrepreneurship is actually a form of sharing. He also references another good podcast, The Soul of Enterprise by Ron Baker and Ed Kless.
  • Justin presents his observation on the duality of nature whereby we see a trend toward greater sharing, yet many continue to hoard. He states how the Christian worldview expects this behavior in a fallen world.
  • Dave closes the show by discussing the trend of “access over ownership” and by asking the audience several questions to consider:
    • If you began to think in terms of only needing access to something at the right time, and not owning it, what areas of your life, and budget might open up for you?
    • When you think about stuff you have, or talents you have developed, what might you be able to contribute that will allow bartering or giving to others?
    • How might it change your ideas and vision in organizations by thinking about products and services that you design or produce once, and then sell it over and over again?
